A little bit about Melanie . . . .

Melanie Collins – Florence Site Director

Melanie Collins is a native of Coward, SC, Melanie has lived in Florence since 1999. As a wife and mother of two, Melanie is passionate about using her abilities of leadership and organization in serving others. With an Associate’s Degree in Public Service from Florence Darlington Technical College and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology from Francis Marion University, Melanie has a variety of life experiences including volunteer service in the community and being a homeschool mother. This experience provides her a unique perspective in managing the Florence site to fulfilling the mission of Girl’s University. In addition, Melanie enjoys spending time with her family, serving in her local church, and reading.

Victoria – Assistant Site Director

A little bit about Victoria . . . .

Hello, my name is Victoria M. Comissiong and I am the Assistant Site Director at Girls University; in Florence, SC. I have been working at Girls U for a year and love the positive effects it has had on me! Along with our after school program, workshops and camps, I have grown tremendously and have the desire to pass on this information to the young ladies in our community. I am the daughter of a breast cancer survivor, and the only girl out of three children. I have a strong passion to share encouragement, comradery and perseverance with the young girls I connect with on a daily basis; a positive aspect of my life I was fortunate enough to receive while growing up.

Christina – Director of STEM and Specialty Programs

A little bit about Christina . . . .

Christina – Joy Ellerbe is the Director of STEM and Specialty Programs who works with GU Students and Staff to help create and facilitate a fun, hands-on learning environment through the use of  STEM Curriculum.

After working with OM Ships International and holding a Public Relations Coordinator position with Keep Florence Beautiful, Christina – Joy’s passion for tinkering and empowering by use of knowledge pointed her in the direction early childhood education. Christina – Joy has worked as a Learning Support Specialist and STEM Enrichment Coordinator for Tiny Techz, a compelling STEM company built on facilitating critical thinking and STEM classes. Due to Christina – Joy’s playful nature it’s a surprise that she holds a BA in Religion, Philosophy, & Political Science.


Danielle Scanlon – Tutoring Specialist and STEM Instructor

A little bit about Danielle. . . . . . 

Hello my name is Danielle Scanlon and I am originally from New Jersey before moving to Florence four years ago to start my commitment with Teach For America! I graduated with a bachelors in psychology from Quinnipiac University and with a Masters of Education from Francis Marion Univeristy. I currently teach 7th grade math and love making learning fun and engaging by making it hands on and relevant to the scholar! In my free time I am a mother to four fur babies (2 cats and 2 dogs) and enjoy going to the lake and beach!

Jamyra – Timmonsille Site Coordinator

A little bit about Jamyra . . . .

I am a native of Florence, South Carolina. My hobbies are singing(karaoke), shopping, reading and hosting events. I love people, I love making people happy. I have worked in the Education system for 8 years. Within those eight years, I have taught Kindergarten, First grade, have been a paraprofessional and many other hats. Personal growth is important to me and it is my ma goal in life to grow and reach my fullest potential in life.

Shearia – After School Instructor

A little bit about Shearia . . . .

I’m married and the mother of 3 wonderful kids. I started my career in corporate America. After my job closed I started in healthcare in Labor and Delivery (total opposite I know) lol. I started thinking more and about getting to education. I am an Instructional Assistant at North Vista Elementary. I felt like Girl’s University was a perfect fit for me. A place where I can teach young girls how to be their own type of beautiful and make a difference in the world around them.

Ms. Jane – Bus Driver

 A little bit about Ms. Jane. . . .

I was tired of “retirement” and wanted to do something that inspired me. When I found Girls University, I knew I would love the interaction and chance to make a difference in young girls’ lives. I am currently finishing up my certification for etiquette training. I was a chef at universities for over 34 years. My favorite activity at GU is watching the girls grasp a concept and witnessing their confidence soar.


Jessica – After School Instructor

A little bit about Rose. . . .

I am a third year student at Francis Marion University. I currently double major in Marketing and HR Management. Working as a Marketing Specialist as Girls University is neat because I get to experience everything I learn in my classes. After graduation, I hope to apply for a post-graduate program. I love coming into Girls University and watching our scholars live with confidence.


A little bit about Kierra. . . .

I am Kierra McCall, I am 16 and I live in Darlington, SC. I am a freshman in college and an ambassador in Girl Scouts. I plan to transfer to MIT or Princeton, when I get older I would like to become a pediatric heart surgeon.
